I saw a great article today about the negative health effects that come from negative self-talk. I usually reference the research that shows negative self-esteem and body image is a top clinical risk predictor for depression, eating disorders, and anxiety, but its effects can be even more subtle than we may realize! I am really glad I found and read about this.

Like a lot of stress and mental health issues, becoming fixed on negative self-talk triggers a mind-body connection that is very, very real.

So how can negative self-talk affect our health? According to Joshua Klapow, Ph.D., clinical psychologist, and Sara Stanizai, a licensed psychotherapist, it can in a lot of ways:

  1. It can make your stomach sick or in knots.

  2. Your energy is low.

  3. You can have trouble focusing.

  4. You may not sleep well.

  5. You can get sick more easily.

  6. Your appetite can change.

  7. You may feel pain in your body that doesn't make sense.
